About the Transformation
In its quest to provide digital financial services for all Indonesians, Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI) undertook a holistic transformation initiative that spanned across the digitization of core banking, integration of digital ecosystems, and creation of new digital propositions. Backed by a modern digital banking platform, BRI launched digital-only propositions in just a matter of months with app downloads crossing 100,000 within few months of launch.
Progressing Towards a Cashless World
The financial landscape in Indonesia has traditionally been extremely cash-intensive, much like most other developing markets. However, the growing proliferation of the internet and smartphones is changing this.
Despite the apparent opportunity and demand for digital lending, this area was largely underserved by most Tier-1 banks. BRI decided to take the leap forward and pioneer industry first digital lending propositions. But, the legacy technology infrastructure was a big deterrent – A challenge commonly faced by incumbents globally.
Breaking away From the Shackles of Legacy Infrastructure
To gain speed to market, the bank built a parallel digital lending stack with Finacle Core Banking and Finacle Digital Engagement Suite. The new modern platform paved the way for rapid innovation. BRI became the first bank to be authorized to offer Digital Lending-as-a-service by the country’s Financial Service Authority (OJK).
Pioneering Digital-First Lending in Indonesia
BRI built Pinang, the country’s first fully digital lending product. Targeted at the micro and ultra-micro segment, Pinang offered end-to-end and fully automated loan processing, including credit scoring by Privy, e-KYC and digital signature.
Ceria: A Millennial Focused Digital Commerce App
With the success of Pinang, BRI decided to tap into the millennial segment that constitutes over 35% of the population.
